Our Strategic framework

Proposed Strategic Directions 2010 – 2015

WWDACT is an affiliate of Women With Disabilities Australia. The WWDACT Strategic Directions are adapted from the national WWDA Strategic Plan 2010-2015.

Goal 1 Promote and protect the rights of women with disabilities nationally and in the ACT

Objectives

1.1 Promote WWDACT as the representative organisation for women with disabilities in ACT by:
  • Promoting WWDACT at the ACT level
  • Presence at government, non-government, public and other events, conferences and forums;
  • Representation on ACT committees and advisory fora;
  • Establishment of links and networks with relevant stakeholders;
  • Development of a WWDACT website with best practice in content and design ;
  • Promoting women with disabilities at a national level through participating in national events as representatives of WWDA; and
  • Developing WWDACT policy submissions to relevant inquiries, reviews and consultative processes and disseminating copies to key stakeholders.
1.2. Promote better awareness and implementation of the CRPD and CEDAW for the advancement of the human rights of women with disabilities in the ACT by:
  • Providing links to educative CRPD and CEDAW resource materials on the WWDACT website and promoting their availability; and
  • Developing strategic alliances and collaborative partnerships with ACT stakeholders in the women’s, disability, health and human rights sectors.
1.3. Promote the interests and concerns of women with disabilities in the ACT through representation on relevant committees and advisory fora by:
  • Identifying and promoting opportunities for representation of ACT women with disabilities;
  • Providing WWDACT representatives’ names to committees and advisory fora;
  • Promoting the ACT Women’s Register to constituents and liaising with the Office for Women to improve the participation of women with disabilities; and
  • Reporting on WWDACT representation.
1.4. Promote the interests and concerns of women with disabilities in the development of relevant government policies and other national initiatives by:
  • Identifying opportunities for WWDACT to participate in ACT inquiries, projects, consultative and other relevant processes which impact on women with disabilities in the ACT;
  • Utilising information gathered through consultations with WWDACT members, stakeholders and current research, to develop WWDACT submissions to relevant government processes and other ACT initiatives;
  • Disseminating WWDACT submissions, research reports and other materials to relevant stakeholders, including politicians and ACT Government Departments and agencies; - Identifying opportunities to provide a gender and disability perspective to policy work undertaken by ACT Government departments and other organisations, particularly those in the women’s, disability, and human rights sectors; and
  • Providing links for ACT information to augment initiatives at the national level.

Goal 2 Undertake systemic advocacy in specific areas of concern to women with disabilities

Objectives

2.1. Undertake work in the priority area of women with disabilities’ right to freedom from violence and abuse by:
  • Ensuring the representation of women with disabilities on relevant violence prevention advisory structures in the ACT; and
  • Identifying and maximising opportunities to provide a gender and disability perspective to violence prevention initiatives undertaken by ACT Government departments and other organisations and stakeholders.
2.2. Undertake work in the priority area of women with disabilities’ right to the highest attainable standard of health by:
  • Providing advice to ACT Government on policy, program and service delivery issues emerging from consultations with ACT women with disabilities and their families, the WWDACT membership and joint research with WHCM;
  • Working with WCHM to develop research and build an evidence base, around the Social Determinants of Health issues for Women with Disabilities in the ACT;
  • Contributing to the local implementation and development of the National Health and Hospitals Reforms and the ACT Women’s Health Policy, advocating for women with disabilities;
  • Working with WCHM to identify opportunities to provide a gender and disability perspective to women’s health initiatives undertaken by ACT government and other organisations and stakeholders;
  • Identifying and acting on strategic opportunities for systemic advocacy on the issues relating to women with disabilities’ right to reproductive freedom and health; and
  • Working with WCHM, to identify and act on opportunities for systemic advocacy on access to health services in the ACT for women with disabilities.
2.3. Identify, collate and report on emerging issues for women with disabilities by:
  • Providing advice to ACT Government on policy, program and service delivery issues emerging from the WWDA membership and consultations with ACT women with disabilities;
  • Establishing and strengthening networks and alliances with other disability advocacy organisations in the ACT.
Goal 3 Contribute to the development and implementation of ACT Government policies affecting women with disabilities

Objectives

3.1. Act as a two way conduit between the ACT Government and the community on social policy issues as they affect women with disabilities in the ACT by.
  • Disseminating information on ACT Government policies and initiatives for women with disabilities via the membership, the WCHM and website;
  • Providing advice, where relevant, to Government on the impact of current policies and initiatives and suggest new strategies and/or new models and changes as appropriate;
  • Providing copies of WWDACT's submissions, publications, Newsletter, and other documentation to relevant ACT Government Departments, agencies, Ministers and other stakeholders as appropriate; and
  • Providing advice to Government on policy, program and service delivery issues emerging from the WWDACT membership and women with disabilities in the ACT and their families.
