Justice Reinvestment in the ACT

Last week Marcia and Pip participated in the “Building Communities Not Prisons” conference, which was hosted jointly by the ACT Government, ACTCOSS, the Australian National University and KPMG. We heard from people involved in justice reinvestment programs and in changes to the justice system in the USA, New Zealand, and across Australia and participated in workshops with others from government, community and academia.

This video was released which describes the approach so far to justice reinvestment in the ACT and the ACT Minister for Corrections, Shane Rattenbury, announced in his opening speech that the ACT Cabinet has agreed to invest in reducing the number of people in prison rather than spending money on building a bigger prison in the ACT.

So we are continuing our work with women in prison in the ACT to identify opportunities for contributing to the discussions on how justice reinvestment might be shaped for the smaller but growing population of ACT women in the prison.
