The Commonwealth government has announced the appointment of Gary Johns as the head of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).  Gary Johns was a Labor minister under the Keating government who was known for his views that charities should not be allowed to advocate for changes to government policy.  The appointment comes at the same time as an ongoing Treasury inquiry, seeking to limit how much advocacy environmental groups and other charities can engage in, as well as an upcoming review of the ACNC Act.

Speaking after his appointment, Mr Johns said he wanted the ACNC to focus more on ensuring charities were fulfilling their charitable purpose.
