Many women reaching their 40s and beyond can be influenced by the myth that life is over, or at least on its way to being over, but this simply isn’t true. With a lot of life ahead, and a good amount of life experience behind, midlife is the perfect time to really focus on ourselves—our health and fitness, sexuality and intimacy and emotional and mental wellbeing.
The Midlife—Mood, menopause, and more event was specifically developed for women in their 40s and beyond. National and local experts in women’s health shared up-do-date and practical information about a range of issues impacting women at midlife, such as: menopause, emotional wellbeing and mental health, sexual and reproductive health, sexuality and intimacy and general wellbeing. Over two sessions the approximately 130 attendees heard from: Dr Kelly Teagle, Dr Toni Ashmore, Lisa Grant, Dr Amanda Barry, Dr Anne Embry, Professor Lauren Williams, and Anne Carver. Audience members also viewed a screening of a webcast on menopause from Jean Hailes for Women’s Health.
A health expo formed part of this forum to provide the audience with an opportunity to gather information about local ACT health services and community organisations relevant to their health needs. The organisations represented at the event included: Jean Hailes for Women’s Health, ACT Health (material relating to mental health, Donate Life, Health Direct, Walk In Centre, heart health, Canberra Hospital Foundation and other), Sexual Health & Family Planning ACT, and Arthritis ACT.
The event was supported by the ACT Health Directorate and held at the Canberra Institute of Technology Function Centre
