Over the last month WCHM have been finalising the results from WCHM’s audits of the bus stops identified by ACT women. On 29th November we released the report of our findings titled Making ACT bus stops work for women –Women’s perceptions of safety from recent changes to some of ACT’s bus stop locations. Read more below.
Given our focus on the women in the Alexander Maconochie Centre over the last year WCHM was pleased to see the release of the report on the Healthy Prison Review of the AMC by the ACT Inspector of Correctional Services on Tuesday 26 November. The Report has some welcome recommendations to improve the situation for women detainees in the AMC, given their small numbers (compared to the numbers of men) and their location in the middle of the AMC. Read more below.
WCHM will soon be focusing on focus groups for the Health and wellbeing of older ACT women, so please let us know if you would like to participate at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Workplace Gender Equality Agency released its scorecard on the gender pay gap and the numbers remain alarming for women’s equity. The numbers were consistent with WCHM’s report released last month, Creating Opportunity or Entrenching Disadvantage? 5 Years on – ACT Labour Market Data Update, with 1 in 2 Australians still working in an industry dominated by one gender. The healthcare and social assistance industry is a good example of this with 75-95% of workers being female, and, according to the report is an industry whose pay gap is increasing-in 2015-16 the gap was 14.7% and in 2018-19 the gap is 15.9%.
WCHM will be assisting a forum at our offices on the afternoon of 4 December for women to inform a National Obesity Strategy. Read more below and let us know ASAP if you want to join in!
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence started on 25 November – the International Day of the Elimination of Violence Against Women – and continues till 10 December, the International Human Rights Day. That time is used to highlight the pervasive issue of gender-based violence.
And don’t forget to consider nominating a good woman for the ACT Women’s Awards. Nominations close on 13 December, so nominate an exceptional woman that you know today.
Please follow our regular posts on WCHM’s Facebook page about events and items of interest on these issues, in particular we are posting every day regarding the #16 Days of Action.
